Forest Service plans repair work to section of Trail of Tears it damaged

Five years after a mile of the Trail of Tears was all but destroyed in Monroe County, U.S. Forest Service officials say they have a document on the table that might get the actual repair work started while at the same time helping Indian Tribal nations begin the healing process for what was done to their sacred land.

Melissa Twaroski, who was recently named to the newly created post of coordinator for the Trail of Tears in the Forest Service Southern Region, said repair work to the Trail could begin next summer.
