Site of 1970 shooting of student protesters at Kent State University now national historic landmark

Friday’s commemoration of the shootings at Kent State University May 4, 1970, was both celebratory and somber.

It was celebratory because the many years of work trying to register the 17-acre site as a National Historic Landmark came to fruition with the unveiling of the plaque designation. The site at KSU where four students died and nine others were injured by members of the National Guard during a demonstration joined the ranks with 2,500 other American Landmarks.
