Spain | MPA created in Mediterranean Sea to protect whale, dolphin migrations
Madrid - The government of Pedro Sanchez has created a marine reserve for the migration of whales and dolphins between Alicante and Girona on the east coast of Spain.
There is now a ban on new prospecting or extraction of fossil fuels in the protected area. The reserve covering 46,000 sqkm - an area the size of the Aragon region - responds to the need to limit sound pollution, which is causing the death of various species. It has been enscribed on the list of Specially Protected Areas of Mediterranean Importance (SPAMI).
