Two big sections of historic Fort Jefferson moat at Dry Tortugas NP destroyed by Hurricane Irma

Scaffolding protecting the harbor light at Fort Jefferson in the Dry Tortugas survived the wrath of Hurricane Irma, but large sections of the moat wall at the Civil War-era fort did not.

Two sections of the moat wall, one roughly 65 feet long and another 45 feet long, were battered by waves and wiped out when bands of the storm battered the fort in the Dry Tortugas, Park Manager Glenn Simpson said.
